Traffic Safety

Guest speaker Atle Haglund and Jan Jensen come to the school to talk about road safety.
Many parents, teachers and pupils gathered at our school to hear two guest speakers talking about road safety. Its an issue, as a motorist I believe strongly in. Having many times driven on these dark Norwegian roads, it`s not easy to see children, mothers with prams, pedestrians, Dog walkers and dogs, or cyclists. The evening began with Atle Haglund telling his own dramatic, sad story of how he was knocked down by a large truck on his way home from school. The accident resulted in him looseing both his legs. He is now a well known wheel chair athelete, and is often seen training localy. The second speaker was from the public roads administration, Jan Jensen. He demonstrated and talked about the importance of "being seen". Both speakers answered questions from the parents and pupils. Some children received prizes and one child received a bicycle helmet. Following this there was an oppertunity to visit the local buss staion, with information from one of the bus drivers Einar Opperud. A survey was taken and an oppertunity to take a traffic quiz and draw on a map where one wanted to have ones most wanted bus stop. There was even an oppertunity to make your own traffic safety slogan. Living in a country with dark winters it is imperative to BE SEEN but please all readers remember there are many countries for eg. England with its rainy, grey, foggy days and winter evenings, that need their people to wear reflectors! SEND YOUR CHILDREN AND YOUR SELF TO WORK SAFELY.
